Watching does not shrink the 1,012 hours, but it changes whether you keep logging them. Graded, comprehensible viewing builds listening and vocabulary in context, and saving the words you meet for spaced review turns watch time into study time. There is a catch worth knowing before betting the plan on television. Across the 106 title and language entries in our open Netflix difficulty index, none is rated A1 and only 2 sit at A2, while 82 percent sit at B1 or B2. Ordinary adult television starts at intermediate, so the early hours still need graded or beginner material and the catalogue opens up later. Two honest limits on that: it describes our catalogue rather than Netflix, since we chose these titles as plausibly useful for learners and the selection shapes the distribution as much as the material does, and the bands are editorial estimates of listening difficulty rather than learner test results. Writing system

The Thai script is Brahmi-derived, and its Unicode encoding order follows the Thai Industrial Standard TIS 620-2533. The chart lists 46 code points from U+0E01 to U+0E2E under the heading Consonants, two of which, RU and LU, are annotated as independent vowel letters, leaving 44 consonant letters, and exactly four tone marks at U+0E48 to U+0E4B. Words are not separated by spaces.

Sounds English does not have

Thai plosives hold a three-way laryngeal contrast at the bilabial and alveolar places: voiced /b d/, voiceless unaspirated /p t/, and voiceless aspirated /pʰ tʰ/. English runs a two-way contrast in which aspiration is allophonic and predictable from position, so a single English /p/ covers two separate Thai phonemes. Length is distinctive across all nine Thai vowels.

Grammar to carry

WALS codes Thai with no morphological case-marking and no genders, zero of each, with SVO as the dominant order. The load sits in selection rather than inflection: numeral classifiers are coded Obligatory, and the classifier is set by the noun, so counting any noun means retrieving that noun's classifier. Aspect is carried by separate words rather than endings, and speech level and pragmatic stance ride on their own particle sets.

The hardest part of Thai for English speakers

The obstacle is lexical tone, and specifically that the script does not spell it out. Standard Thai has five tones, mid, low, falling, high and rising, but the Thai block encodes only four tone marks, and the Unicode Standard notes that Thai consonant letters fall into classes that indicate tonal differences. The tone of a written syllable follows from the class of its initial consonant together with any tone mark, rather than being read off a dedicated symbol, so pitch must be resolved before the word is identified. Knowing every letter still leaves a new written word unpronounceable.

What is easier in Thai than people expect

Thai verbs take no person or tense inflection. WALS records no subject person or number marking and no tense-aspect inflection, so one invariant form serves every subject and every time reference, and time is added by a separate word standing beside the verb. The conjugation paradigm that dominates Romance and Slavic study has no counterpart, and a verb met once is a verb known in every tense.

Why the FSI puts Thai where it does

The Foreign Service Institute places Thai in Category III at approximately 44 weeks and 1,012 class hours, less than half the 2,200 hours the same page lists for Mandarin Chinese, even though WALS codes both languages as having a complex tone system. FSI publishes no per-language rationale, so the honest reading is that its groups track observed time to proficiency at FSI rather than a grammar checklist.

Claims about Thai that circulate widely but that we could not trace to a primary source, so this page does not make them.

  • Number of Thai orthographic consonant classes. The high, mid and low three-class analysis is widely repeated, but no allowlisted primary source stating the number three was found, so the hardestThing text says 'classes' with no count and attributes the class-to-tone link to the Unicode Standard, which states it without a number. Verified: the Unicode Standard sentence reads 'The consonants are divided into classes that historically represented distinct sounds, but in modern Thai indicate tonal differences', with no count.
  • Live versus dead syllable terminology, and the exact tone-mark-to-tone mapping table. The original hardestThing text asserted syllable shape as an input to tone computation, which is the live/dead distinction under another name and was supported by no opened source. That phrase has been removed. The field now claims only what Unicode states, namely that the initial consonant's class indicates tonal differences, combined with the four encoded tone marks, and it is worded so as not to imply an exhaustive list of inputs.
  • Rigidity of Thai word order. WALS 81A records the value 'SVO', which is a dominant-order coding rather than a statement that order is fixed, so the text now says 'with SVO as the dominant order'. No source establishing rigidity was opened.
  • Classifier use outside numeral constructions. WALS chapter 55 defines the 'Obligatory' value in terms of numeral-plus-noun constructions, so the text now claims only counting. Thai classifier use with demonstratives was not asserted, since 55A does not cover it and source 11 was read as a table of contents only.
  • Whether Thai aspect marking is specifically particle-based. Iwasaki chapters 14 and 15 are titled 'Speech-level particles' and 'Pragmatic particles', but chapter 12 is titled simply 'Aspect', and no body page was read. WALS 69A supports only that aspect is not affixal, so aspect is now described as carried by separate words rather than endings.
  • Verbal inflection outside person, number, tense and aspect. WALS 29A and 69A establish the absence of subject person/number marking and of tense-aspect inflection. They do not establish the absence of every verbal category, so the original 'no inflection at all' has been narrowed to 'no person or tense inflection'.
  • Total Thai vowel phoneme count. The JIPA Illustration says 'There are nine vowels. Length is distinctive for all the vowels', so only 'nine' is claimed. Counts of 18 or 21 that fold in length and diphthongs were not asserted. PHOIBLE inventory 2215 independently shows nine vowel qualities each occurring in both a short and a long form.
  • Any Thai speaker-population figure, dialect share, or lexical similarity percentage. None stated.
  • The English side of the laryngeal contrast (two-way voicing with allophonic aspiration) is standard phonetic description and was not separately sourced to a JIPA Illustration of English.
  • Iwasaki and Ingkaphirom section and chapter numbers could not be re-opened at verification time: assets.cambridge.org timed out on repeated attempts, so this source is valid-but-unfetchable. The ISBN-13 was checked instead and is structurally valid, carries the Cambridge 978-0-521 prefix, and maps to ISBN-10 0521650852, matching the copyright page the author quoted. All claims that leaned on this source have been narrowed so none depends on an unread body page.
