The Most Spoken Languages in the World (2026)
English tops the list by total speakers, but not by native speakers. Here is the ranking, the reason it changes, and the sources behind it.

English is the most spoken language in the world, with roughly 1.5 billion total speakers, ahead of Mandarin Chinese at about 1.18 billion, Hindi, and Spanish. The twist is that most English speakers learned it as a second language, so the ranking looks different when you count only native speakers. This page lists the top languages by total speakers, explains why the order flips, and points to the ones you can start learning by watching what you already watch.

The top ten by total speakers
| Rank | Language | Total speakers |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | EnglishMost are second-language speakers, which is why it leads on total but not native speakers. | 1.5 billion |
| 2 | Mandarin ChineseLeads the world by native speakers. | 1.18 billion |
| 3 | Hindi | 611 million |
| 4 | Spanish | 561 million |
| 5 | ArabicModern Standard Arabic, spanning many spoken varieties. | 335 million |
| 6 | French | 334 million |
| 7 | Bengali | 274 million |
| 8 | Portuguese | 269 million |
| 9 | IndonesianCounting closely related Malay varieties. | 255 million |
| 10 | Urdu | 246 million |
The ranking flips depending on how you count. English tops the list by total speakers because roughly three in four people who speak it learned it as a second language. By native speakers the order changes: Mandarin Chinese leads, and Spanish, with about 486 million first-language speakers, sits above English. So English is the world's most spoken language, but it is not the most common mother tongue.
These counts are estimates, not a census. Ethnologue revises them every year, the second-language totals swing with where you set the proficiency bar, and whether you split or lump the Chinese and Arabic varieties moves the ranks. Treat the figures as rounded and directional, and name the edition when you cite them.
Three of the top ten, Spanish, French, and Indonesian, are languages you can learn on LingoBinge by watching Netflix with graded subtitles. If you want the most reach for your effort, a widely spoken language is a sensible place to start, and starting with shows you would watch anyway makes the hours easier to keep.

Numbers to retire: myths
A few claims about the biggest languages get repeated everywhere but do not survive a careful read.
Read carefully
Mandarin is the most spoken language in the world.
Half true. Mandarin leads by native speakers, but English leads by total speakers because so many people speak it as a second language. Always say which basis you mean, since conflating native and total counts is the most common error on these lists.
Read carefully
Half the world speaks English.
Not close. English has roughly 1.5 billion speakers out of about 8.2 billion people, so under one in five. Even generous second-language thresholds top out near 1.5 to 2 billion.
Read carefully
There are exactly 7,000 languages.
It is an estimate, not a fixed number. Ethnologue counts 7,170 living languages in 2026, the figure shifts every year with language death and reclassification, and rival catalogues count differently.
Spanish, French, and Indonesian are all in the top ten and all learnable on LingoBinge. Press play on a show you would watch anyway, and it swaps subtitle words into your target language at your level.
