Can you learn Arabic faster by watching TV?
Watching does not shrink the 2,200 hours, but it changes whether you keep logging them. Graded, comprehensible viewing builds listening and vocabulary in context, and saving the words you meet for spaced review turns watch time into study time. There is a catch worth knowing before betting the plan on television. Across the 106 title and language entries in our open Netflix difficulty index, none is rated A1 and only 2 sit at A2, while 82 percent sit at B1 or B2. Ordinary adult television starts at intermediate, so the early hours still need graded or beginner material and the catalogue opens up later. Two honest limits on that: it describes our catalogue rather than Netflix, since we chose these titles as plausibly useful for learners and the selection shapes the distribution as much as the material does, and the bands are editorial estimates of listening difficulty rather than learner test results. What learning Arabic actually involves
Writing system
Arabic script runs right to left and joins cursively. Unicode encodes one code point per letter regardless of its written shape and gives each character a Joining_Type: dual-joining letters take four contextual forms, isolated, final, medial and initial, while right-joining letters take two. Vowels are combining tashkil marks on consonant letters, and normal writing omits them.

Sounds English does not have
Modern Standard Arabic carries four pharyngealized coronal phonemes, /tˤ/, /dˤ/, /sˤ/ and /ðˤ/, against plain /t/, /d/, /s/ and /ð/, plus a uvular plosive /q/ and a pharyngeal /ʕ/. English uses neither secondary pharyngealization nor a uvular or pharyngeal place, so one English coronal spans an Arabic contrast whose cue, a lowered F2 in the adjacent vowel, is not contrastive in English.
Grammar to carry
Modern Standard Arabic marks three cases, nominative, genitive and accusative, while WALS records the spoken Egyptian variety as having no morphological case-marking at all and two genders. Standard word order is VSO and Egyptian is SVO. Nouns inflect at once for gender, humanness, number, definiteness and case, and in the Egyptian variety the verb indexes both the A and the P argument.

The hardest part of Arabic for English speakers
The hardest thing is diglossia. The written and broadcast standard is not the variety used in ordinary conversation, and the two diverge in phonology, syllable structure and syntax, so a form stored from one does not license the other: WALS codes Modern Standard Arabic as VSO and Egyptian Arabic as SVO with no morphological case-marking at all. Saiegh-Haddad measured that distance as interference even in first-language literacy, where phonemic and syllabic distance both degraded phoneme isolation and pseudoword decoding. A learner reads printed prose and still cannot parse an unscripted exchange.

What is easier in Arabic than people expect
Predicate nominals take no copula: WALS records zero copula as possible for Egyptian Arabic, so an equational sentence is complete without the present-tense form of the verb to be that Romance and Germanic clauses oblige. Egyptian Arabic has no indefinite article at all, and the standard marks definiteness with an affix, so a bare noun is indefinite by default and the two-article system of English, French and German has no counterpart.

Why the FSI puts Arabic where it does
The Foreign Service Institute places Arabic in Category IV at 88 weeks and 2,200 class hours, its longest published timeline, and gives Mandarin Chinese the same total in the same category, even though Arabic is written with an alphabet whose letters each take a single code point. FSI attaches no per-language rationale, describing the category only as exceptionally difficult for native English speakers, so the figure records observed time to an ILR score of 3 rather than a grammar checklist.

Claims about Arabic that circulate widely but that we could not trace to a primary source, so this page does not make them.
- A letter count for the Arabic alphabet. No standards-body or government source I opened publishes one. The Unicode Arabic block encodes basic letters together with hamza variants, teh marbuta, alef maksura and combining marks, and gives no alphabet-size figure, so the writingSystem field uses encoding properties instead of a letter tally.
- The figure 'twenty-eight' as a letter count. The one primary source that gives 28 for Arabic (Al Malwi et al. 2024, JIPA, p. 545) states it as a consonant-phoneme count for Modern Standard Arabic against twenty-seven consonants for Abha Arabic. Verified verbatim at source. That is a phoneme inventory, not an alphabet, so it was not converted into a letter count and the number is not used at all.
- A number of grammatical numbers (a singular / dual / plural three-way system). The dual is standardly described for Arabic, but no source I could open states the count, so grammarLoad names number as a category without counting it.
- A count of derived verb forms. Ryding's 2005 contents give separate chapters for Form I through Form X plus Forms XI-XV, but no source read states a canonical total, so no number was written.
- Any figure for the distance between Modern Standard Arabic and a spoken variety, and any count of Arabic varieties or speakers. No lexical-similarity or mutual-intelligibility percentage was sourceable, so the hardestThing field states the divergence qualitatively and backs it with two specific WALS codings instead.
- Ferguson's 1959 definition of diglossia. The DOI resolves but the article page returned HTTP 403, so it was not read and not cited.
- Lexical divergence between Modern Standard Arabic and the spoken varieties. VERIFIER-ADDED: hardestThing originally asserted divergence in 'lexicon', but Saiegh-Haddad's abstract examines only two diglossic variables, phoneme structure and word syllabic structure, and the WALS codings cited are word order and case. No cited source measures vocabulary difference, so the field now names only phonology, syllable structure and syntax.
- Any characterisation of the Mandarin Chinese writing system. VERIFIER-ADDED: fsiNote originally contrasted the Arabic alphabet against 'a large inventory of memorised characters' for Mandarin. The full state.gov page was retrieved and parsed and contains no writing-system content of any kind, and no allowlisted source on Chinese script is cited in this record. The contrast now states only the Arabic side, which Unicode supports, while still naming Mandarin as the FSI comparison.
